Peru
A fascinating country containing 84 out of 104 ecosystems found in the world today (as ranked by the World Resources Institute). It has an immense wealth of wilderness, climate variety and history. We, however, specialise in Chile and for that reason we offer only Machu Picchu, with a stay over in Lima, as an itinerary option
Lima
Originally the Spanish colonial capital for the South American region founded in 1535 and still the capital today. A busy city set beside the Pacific Ocean and enveloped in a sea fog for most of the year. Due to its history there is an interesting colonial area and a number of museums worth visiting such as the Gold Museum and a vibrant night life. Our itinerary to Machu Picchu includes a stop over in Lima.
Machu Picchu (including Cusco)
Cusco
In order to get to Machu Picchu it is necessary to arrive at Cusco. Cusco is located at an altitude of 3,360 mts above sea level in the south-eastern part of the Andes mountains and was the ancient Inca capital dating back to the 1438. It sprawls, carpet-like, over the surface of the surrounding hills and steep valley walls. The Ancient Inca ruins and monuments are in a good condition and can be seen in many places. It is also a stunning example of a Spanish colonial city (the Spanish arrived in 1533) with magnificent colonial buildings and spectacular churches, monasteries and convents. It is a very popular tourist destination, specifically because it serves as the base which to venture out to see the mystic treasures of the "Hidden Valley", home to the perfectly-preserved Inca city of Machu Picchu.
NOTE: Visitors should note that it is common to suffer from altitude sickness in Cusco and Machu Picchu. It is best not to drink too much alcohol and to allow a day or two to adjust. Travel time by plane from Lima is approximately two hours when flying via Arequipa.
Machu Picchu
Note: The rainy season is December to March
Located at high altitude. Travel time from Cusco is 3 hrs by train and 30 mins by helicopter.
Machu Picchu was "discovered" in 1911 by Hiram Bingham having been hidden from view from the outside world by jungle over growth. It is now the principal reason why most visitors come to Peru. It is a beautifully preserved Inca city that sits like a mystic fairytale village in an enclave on the saddle of a mountain overlooking the deep canyon of the Urubamba river.
Constructed out of perfectly-cut stone blocks that have been "slotted" together with such a tight fit that no cement of any type was required, one can only stand in awe and be amazed by how advanced the Inca's were. The first question which comes to mind, when taking into account the location and perfect construction, is how on earth could anyone build such a place. The second, considering how advanced they were with an excellent water irrigation system, an observatory to study the stars with "windows" perfectly aligned to the sun rise and no evidence of a jail, is "where did we go wrong?". It looks as though they had the perfect society.
It is impossible to begin to describe how stunningly majestic and spiritual this area is.
It is well worth a visit.
